My name is Lana Polkinghorne and I am a Lactation Consultant in a small
community hospital in Southwestern Ontario. I rarely use nipple shields of
any kind..only as a last resort. I have ended up with a client who
delivered elsewhere and was given a nipple shield day 1-2 and then
discharged. She had PIH and an IUGR baby. He is now three weeks old and I
am having a rough time getting rid of the shield. I know they cannot be
cut as the old ones could. Mom is trying to decrease the use of the
shield, but remains quite "fragile" from her birth experience and does not
feel she can go"cold Turkey" weaning from it. One suggestion I got was to
totally retrain the baby by removing him from the breast..pumping and
cuping from several days..and then trying to go back to breast without the
shield. don't know if this would work or not. By the way..so far he is
gaining fine. any suggestions would be appreciated....Lana
