One of my favorite series The Clan Of the Cave Bear by Jean M.
Auel, describes breastfeeding as a privilege of being female and a man can't
tell her how long she can nurse her baby and can't stop of her from nursing
someone else's baby. The men get discouraged when a girl is born because it
may mean 3-4 years before they can have a boy. This prehistoric culture
nursed for at least 3 years. Fertility, herbs, engorgement, poor milk supply
are also discussed in this story. I read this story before I even thought of
having babies and I often think of it. I think I recall the heroine tandem
nursing in one of the sequels. It is too lengthy to read just for the
breastfeeding part, but caution...if you do start reading it , you won't be
able to stop until you read all 4 in the series.
