This is purely anecdotal, but when I was 32 weeks pregnant with my son,
now 6, I had to have surgery for hemorrhoids (ouch). After Brookes was
born, I was pretty diligent about being "regular" and included prunes
and prune juice in my diet. He was also very gassy and smelly, but
seemed to be happy enough. I can remember thinking, "My God, this is
the worst-smelling child I have ever encountered.". When I stopped the
prunes and juice, he stopped stinking, too. Prunes and pears contain
sorbitol, which can cause gas and diarrhea in adults, so it made sense
to me that the prunes could have caused him to be gassy. I think (but
I'm not positive) that sorbitol is also in apple juice. It can be found
in some processed foods and is used as a sugar substitute. I would ask
this mom about her diet.
