In one of my doula journals there was a blurb on this very subject! I'd be curious
for Dr. Jack or Tom Hale's opinion.
Post Partum Depression Herb Use
In response to a question posed regarding SJW for ppd, Jonathan Zuess, MD states
that the herb should never be used by pregnant or nursing mothers, or children under
twelve years of age.
Although it is not as potent as Prozac, it is still an MAO inhibitor and works like
Prozac. Zuess reports that a good alternative is vitex (Vitex agnus castus). This
herb works to normalize the reproductive system.
Studies have also shown that vitex enhances the progesterone cycle while preventing
the realease of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) which makes it the "perfect herb
for reigning the hormonal roller coaster ride of post pregnancy."
Topically, clary sage essential oil helps postpartum depression. The oil, which has
estrgenic properties, helps balance a women's moods. Place about five to eight
drops in a bath or mix a few drops in hand lotion to use as the need arises.

Because I'm not in the medical or botanical field, I'd love some feedback.
Especially since it doesn't mention "while breastfeeding" anywhere.
Thanks,
