I often work with newborns who have not yet learned to feed and who are
biting rather than suckling. I teach parents to do a "suck training
exercise" with a finger (pointing out what proper tongue position must be
for effective milk removal from the breast.) If the baby must be fed before
he learns to nurse, finger-feeding seems to be an effective way to
accomplish this while continuing the "suck training" and rewarding effective
suckling.
