What is normal practise in the USA regarding pain control for women post
Ceasarian Section? One Hospital I worked in it was fasionable to use PCA
morphine. The dope guys were adamant that they were doing the women a big
favour. I personally have my doubts. The women mobilised later, still had
lots of pain, unless they were very actively dosing themselves and they were
comparitivley less able to participate in caring for the their baby. I also
felt that it was not great in terms of breastfeeding. Has anyone done any
studies on the effect on breastfeeding with this type of analgesia?
My basis for comparison was C/S mothers who were given non-steriodal
anti-inflammatories instead of morphine or pethidine. I had worked with this
system previously and the mothers seemed to have less pain, mobilised faster
plus breastfeeding was better.
