Yes, I am trying to fit a bunch of stuff in one post! :)
First, I have been working with a mom who delivered at 41 weks, after
failed induction and resultant c-section, a normal baby girl about 6
weeks ago. Mom has some confidence issues in terms of her role as a
mother, but has been very committed to breastfeeding. Since day 4 she
has had a cracked nipple on the right side. Mom has a HUGE (like I am
frightened by it) crack on her right nipple. I have checked her
latch, an IBCLC whom I trust completely has checked her latch-- can't
see anything to correct. Tried topical treatments, etc. No evidence
of yeast. Baby sucks normally on fingers, no hint of tongue or other
problems. Mom has been nursing on left side only, pumping and
bottlefeeding on right side. Suggested the bottle might be altering
latch, mom will stop bottles if she must, BUT has to return to work in
a few weeks anyway. Any suggestions?
Second, I had surgery for an ectopic pregnancy last week-- Monday,
actually. Since then I have had an almost complete lack of milk. My
20 month old is still nursing a few times a day, and is extremely
frustrated. I know "personal" questions aren't usually kosher here,
but I wondered if you all could offer some encouragement. My milk
WILL eventually come back, right?
On a positive note, in my 6th grade class today we were discussing
Letters to the Editor and I shared examples I had written which were
(of course-- what else do I write angry letters about!) about
breastfeeding. The students were INCREDIBLY receptive, asking
perceptive questions. We talked about formula marketing practices,
the dangers of formula and the reasons to breastfeed. The BOYS, even,
were very enthusiastic. Interestingly enough, when I did a unit on
marketing and brought up Nestle in my "slow" class last year, no
students had been nursed. In my academically gifted class this year,
anout 10 in 28 had been breastfed. Makes you wonder...
