A mother who has never been pregnant and is consdering adoptive nursing
has a couple questions I could not answer. (We have already discussed
that she should expect to nurse for the relationship and that any milk
obtained should be considered a bonus.) I feel that these are
reasonable questions to help her make an informed choice. She says she
would definitely breastfeed a birth child, but needs more information
about adoptive nursing. She has been told about another mom who have
taken hormones for adoptive nursing and is reportedly in danger of
losing her baby related to side effects of the drugs affecting her
emotional state She would like to know:.

1. What are her chances of producing milk? In what quantity or
percentage of baby's total needs? Statistics anyone? Or even an
educated guess based on having worked with a significant number of women
in these circumstances?

2. What are the "side effects" of adoptive nursing (without taking
hormones, only taking fenugreek and blessed thistle)--menstrual
irregularities for example?

Please respond privately as well as to the list.
