I have been working with a baby who is 3 and 1/2 months old and never has
breastfed. Baby received bottles at the hospital. This was combined with a
tired Mom who couldn't fight with him those first few days ( had C sec) so
she elected to pump and feed EBM via bottle. About 4 weeks ago she decided
to get a better pump then the battery powered single pump she was using so
she contacted me for the first time. At that first visit she asked if babies
ever have been known to BF after 2 months on a bottle. I told her that it
wouldn't hurt to try and we discussed a plan. She was leaving for the West
Coast to visit family for 2 weeks and decided to wait until her return home
to try. Well, she and I developed a plan last week where she would pump and
stimulate a letdown, start him on the bottle and then switch him to the
breast. Well, the good news is that it is working on the left side! She still
has to start him on the bottle but once he gets going he will accept the
switch to the breast and continue until he detaches by himself, about 10 min.
I am seeing her on Thursday to try to work with him going on the right
breast.
Mom is so happy that she didn't give up!
