Re: the recent mentions of BFing in TV sitcoms:
Came across a real oldie the other day, on an old episode of "All in the
Family" from the mid-70s. Gloria & Mike (the young adult couple in the
series) were preparing to go out for the first time after the birth of their
baby. The show opened with Gloria filling bottles, breastpump in view on the
kitchen counter, and talking about how much work it was to get the milk in
the bottles - and the obvious assumption was that formula wasn't even a
consideration.
I wondered if the actress really had just given birth & was BFing -
certainly she had the "nursing mother" look about the breasts. And the baby
they showed was *really* a newborn - still had his cord stump in evidence,
treated with the old triple-dye. Usually they try to pawn off these big old
8-month babies as NBs on TV!
Cathy Bargar RN, IBCLC - spending WAY too much time in front of the TV,
coping with a flare-up of back pain and a nasty case of conjunctivitis.
Yuck - so icky - gives me renewed sympathy for the poor little babies that
get it, no wonder they can be cranky! And I don't have any expressed breast
milk to use to clear it up!
