I agree it's a laundry problem, given all the 'normal' signs of a healthy
baby. What many new moms worry about, my DIL included are these:
1) Baby just fed for 40+ minutes and lost it all - or so it seems from the
apparent volume on everyone's clothing. Baby starts fussing & chewing her
hands again in 5-15 min and feeds for another 20-40 min.
2) It's such a WASTE of milk when she has to work so hard to pump milk (1-2
oz per session) for the next day's day care supply, and may not have enough.
When given a bottle, baby swigs down 2-3 oz every 1.5 hrs in day care and
rejects a pacifier.
3) Other issues involved: Mom finds she was completely unprepared for the
intensity of her personal physical involvement. She was expecting to feed
for 20 min every 2-3 hours (translation: 3-4 hours), change the diaper and
baby sleeps or plays the rest of the time. Reality for her is "all the
time", like baby is a permanent chest appendage, at times to the point of
not being able to use the commode without baby crying from separation
anxiety, and not being able to take a shower until Dad gets home at +/- 6pm.
"Other" babies don't do this, she thinks, and wants to know what she's doing
wrong.
It can help to ask a few leading questions to see if Mom has other
underlying issues that bother her.
