As a chronic over-producer (with three children over a period of 11 years of
lactating) I have to disagree with the guru on this one. Some women will make
more milk than they need...and in tribal cultures do you know what happened? I
would guess they were utilized to help support the babies of others.

The only time I was ever "comfortable" postpartum was when I had my third
and...that was because I was still nursing my second. Two were enough to keep up
with my supply.

With my first I had recurrent mastitis for three months which I now recognize as
being related to this chronic over fullness....for which I was advised to never
pump or express lest I stimulate more. Anecdotally I can tell you that it is a
great relief for us overproducers to hear "It is OK to pump or
express...eventually baby will catch up." I am not the only one who feels
this...overproducers I work with will often thank me profusely for this advice.

In an ideal world, women do not need pumps but...in that same world, women
tandem nurse and nurse each other's babies and do not wear bras that bind them
and keep them from leaking.
