This problem of "not enough" resonates around the world. It is THE most
common reason women switch to ABM. From my reading I would dare say it is
an age old phrase. Whether for valid reasons or not, many women have
always doubted whether they make "enough." The picture today has been
skewed by the fact that ABM fed babies don't feed as frequently as BF
babies, so mother's expectations are skewed when baby wants to nurse every
couple of hours in the beginning. The message is that feeding often must
mean there isn't "enough."
I think it is sad that this mom got the message that she wouldn't make
"enough." from whoever told her this. Good grief - he was NINE pounds :-)
I always reassure moms that they will make enough. That her body will
know exactly how much her baby (large or small) will need. When my dil had
a 11 lb. 9 1/2 oz (I'm not supposed to forget the 1/2 oz) baby she just
went on the assumption that if he needed more she would make more. Yet
others consistently said she would need to top up with formula. - she
didn't ever! It all depends on where mom is coming from.
Our messages to everyone must be consistent. We can't doubt or hedge. Mom
will make enough if the cycle isn't messed with. If an IBCLC said this to
her then shame on her. IBCLCs, unfortunately or not, come in all types
with all sorts of personal beliefs and opinions. We aren't manufactured
and then turned lose, all saying and believing the same things. (Many of
us lean to heavily at times on our "sample of one" ie: personal
experience). So the messages mom may hear may vary. And I also hope it
wasn't a "real" IBCLC who told her this :-) Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
