Cindy,
Thank you for sharing the information about your nephew.
I saw this mom and baby yesterday, baby is still in NICU, 8 days old. Baby
is now 60g above birthweight, doing well medically.
While mother is still very motivated, baby gets very agitated very quickly,
no patience at the breast! We do have lots of support from physicians to
direct breastfeed.
Mom continues pumping, and is learning to gavage baby. Mother has been
pumping manually at home, and using electric at hospital. I gave her a
donated double mini-electric yesterday. She was so thrilled. I know it is
not the ideal, but this mom has no other options, no money. I discussed the
importance of human milk and I think mother understands that she may need to
pump long-term for supplemental feeds. Mother is very loving, spends all
day in NICU.
Baby can nipple with bottle, lots of dribbling though.
While I would think that this mom would appreciate the contact with another
family, she speaks only Spanish. She is illegal, living with her sister, no
involved father of baby.
Long-term is unknown, baby and mom may be forced to return to Mexico.
Thanks for the information,
Lu
