A mom who is not immune risks contracting active chicken pox and developing
severe disease. She also risks giving chicken pox to the baby.
Risk from the vaccine in terms of spread is only the vaccine virus.
I had one breastfeeding mom in my practice get varivax as she was confirmed
to not be immune.
I always ask about parental history when giving varivax and if the parents
have no history of the disease I tell them to call their doctor ASAP when
they get home.
BTW, Pat, numbers I give parents are about 90% protection 10% break through.
There is an office based research study being done on post exposure vaccine
prophylaxis. Email me if you want info.
