Dear Alice,
Several years ago I had a client with Sjogren's and I asked on Lactnet.
There was not a lot of information but the following is pretty much what I
found out:
<<This is an immunologic disorder characterized by deficient moisture
production of the lacrimal, salivary and other glands resulting in dryness
of eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes. The symtoms affect primarily
women over the age of 40. sjogrens syndrome is frequently associated with
Raynaud's phenomenon, rheumatoid arthritis, waldenstrom's macroglobuinemia,
and lymphoma. Treatment includes application of artificial tears and the use
of soft contact lenses that can be moistened often, sipping fluids frequently
and avoiding use of medications that tend to deplete body fluids.>>
The mother I worked with continued to breastfeed - her baby was older though.
There was a possibility of her having to take a medication that her doctor
felt was contraindicated for breastfeeding (I don't know ....) but she didn't
have to take it.
Yours,
Janaki Costello, IBCLC, LLLL, ICCE, C.D.
El Cerrito, CA.
