The third grade (level 3) program for NY State breastfeeding education
starts off by leading us all into the characteristics of Mammals. Yes,
dogs, cats, gerbils, they all get their mother's milk until time for their
species' unique food. Then we get to humans and the wording slips into,
"breastmilk or formula," "breastfed or bottlefed." I thought we were
trying to persuade our children that breastfeeding was the normal way we
feed our young? Is it enough to merely have heard the word breast? I was
so excited by the concept of breastfeeding being written into all grade
levels in a whole state. I don't understand the advantage of this program
if it is presenting breastmilk and formula as equals. This is what our
culture HAS been doing. Shucks,
