I would appreciate assistance from the physicians on Lactnet as to how to
respond to a physician I will be meeting with soon.
A physician at our hospital has requested that the Medela handout on
Storage of Breastmilk not be given to her mothers....especialy during the
summer months. A mother came into her office last week (verrrrrry hot time
in Chicago) and handed the doctor the pamphlet while asking if it was okay
that she had given her baby milk that was sitting in the car while they were
shopping. If read properly, the handout states particular temperatures that
are reasonable for "room temperature" at 6-10 hours...none of which includes
100 degrees or higher. The physician feels that most of her clients are
"ignorant" and that Medela's interest is only in selling and profits. She
claims she is liable for any information they bring her. A couple of other
physicians do not understand what the problem is since the info is clearly
stated in the form but, have suggested I gather research etc... I have
already begun that project. She is a very high strung individual as it is
and I am sure this will be a mission on her part. I will also present info
from LLL. Short of reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale
Carnegie (as suggested by my 14 y/o son), do you have words of wisdom?
    Thank-you in advance,
Sharon Lemon, RN, CLE, (waiting for IBCLC)
