HI all, long time no chat. I have just seen a lady with her first child,
Zack aged 4 weeks old weighing 2.9 kgs, birthweight of 3.250 grams. Born 2
weeks early by elective caeser for small pelvis. Since birth baby has been
very sleepy and never demand fed, always had to be woken otherwise would go
9 hours or so between feeds. Baby was seen by a paed last week who did a
full work over and found nothing wrong medically. The baby today is not
attatching to the breast at all although he has been previously but just not
well. Is still searching but at the breast the lips just close on the
nipple and then he starts to nibble as if he is making some effort, but he
isn't even on. Mums breasts and nipples are perfect for feeding and she has
plenty of milk. On assessment baby has a very weak suck and one corner of
the upper lip is sucked in. Mum gave the the baby a bottle last night, of
EBM and baby drinks this well, but still the corner of the upper lip is
sucked in. He has a dummy on occasion, but is having trouble sucking this
now to. What would suddenly cause a baby to not suck at 4 weeks. Mum feels
that he is loosing the skill he once had. He certainly still seems
interested in breastfeeding, but just can't. Any ideas.
