Just wanted to ventilate. One of the NP's at work asked me to consult with a
6 weeks Post Partum mom and baby. FP doc had prescribed estrogen containing
OCP's at 2 weeks PP (urgh....) and within 24 hours mom could only express
teaspoons instead of ounces. Had a copious milk supply before, per mom. Gave
her sns with instructions and Fenugreek recommnedation. F/U one week later,
no improvement. Mom still expressed interest in EBF, so the NP prescribed
Reglan. Pt calls me one day later to say her husband does not want her to
breastfeed, because they travel to LA every weekend and it would be too
difficult . Anyways, let her know it was ok to bottle feed if that was her
choice and not just husbands. She told me if this had not happened she would
have continued to Breastfeed, but now too much hassle with SNS, etc. I am so
mad. I sent out an email to all Docs at our hospital, about Contraception and
BreastFeeding, but I know most of them do not want to hear Ancedotal cases.
They want well controlled, randomized, prospective studies. As if observation
has no basis in reality. I could have meausured this mom's milk before and
after, she had no other risk factors for milk supply decrease, and they still
would tell me it was not the hormones. Someday they will get it......Lisa
