Holly asked about alternatives to the diaper bag discharge gift. I also
wonder why we feel it is necessary to give mothers presents from the
hospital. As formula companies pay hospitals lots of money to give away those
bags, it is always a pleasure to see this marketing practice halted! If you
really must give mothers something, the following is a sampling of ideas:

1. a canvas bag with the hospital's logo and advertising of its maternity
services. Inside would be coupons from community merchants, where to get help
with breastfeeding, etc. The hospital auxillary often does this. I have also
seen the auxillary supply hand crafted baby hats, booties, small blankets,
and slings. The Junior League in Boston put personal care discharge bags
together for new mothers for our public hospital.

2. a coupon book with a breastfeeding theme (15 minutes of free consultation
with a lactation consultant, discounts off of breastfeeding books, pumps, and
other supplies. Certificate for discounts on classes or drop in centers for
breastfeeding mothers

3. breastfeeding books funded by community service organizations like the
Kiwanas

4. doula services coupons

5. home delivery coupons for food, errand running etc

6. a library card and book for the baby so parents get the idea that they
actually need to spend time with their child
