Had to enter the discussion about pumps at Ronald McDonald houses. One
opened in the past year at the hospital where I work. I felt a lot of 'my'
NICU moms might be staying there and inquired about having a breastpump
available for them. I was told it was all planned. So when the first mom I
knew might need it asked bout it, you can imagine how upset I was when she
was told there was not one available there. I checked with our Medela rep
because at the time we had no contact with anyone from A/E-H. She explained
that it was a policy (I think) of that company to donate a lactina to any R.
McD. house that requested one. (I think more than one would be appropriate
for the large houses that routinely have many, many moms.) I called and
spoke with the house manager who needed to be the one to request it. It
took a few months on her part to get the letter out and may have been done
finally after I explained the situation to one of our social workers who
then 'reminded' her. We now have the pump there for any mom who needs to
use it. I would hope that this is a US wide policy so anybody affiliated
with a hospital with a R. McD. house could check into it through their rep.
