With reference to the note about the mom with gallstones. We had a similar
situation last month with a Mom who was hospitalized for three weeks prior
to delivery on heavy doses of Morphine because of kidney and gallbladder
stones.
She continued to be on morphine after the delivery and the baby did have with-
drawal signs and it was very difficult for him to breastfeed. Everytime we
put
him near the breast, he would get hysterical. Mom was french so their was
also a bit of a language problem just to add to the situation. She could
speak some
english, but didn't always understand what we were trying to convey to her.

We started her on the breast pump following every attempt at breastfeeding
and eventually he did nurse well, but it was a difficult few days for both
Mom and the baby.
