I think I have written before about my daughter's experience in high
school. Her grade 11 Health class included a section on breastfeeding, but
it was unfortunately not very well taught. The teacher told the class that
she had breastfed her own child "for a long time." Lisa asked "how long?"
and the teacher said "four months." Lisa said that was perhaps the reason
some of her information was inaccurate, as many of the people she knew had
breastfed for three or four years or longer per child, and she herself
nursed until almost five. The teacher had told the class that you couldn't
get pregnant while breastfeeding and that you couldn't breastfeed "too long"
or the baby would get teeth and bite you. Lisa corrected both of these in
class, but the questions were still on the final test - and the teacher
expected the original (but incorrect) answers. Very frustrating experience
for Lisa! My letter was not responded to.

And another story - we have the INFACT posters up at our house (and if you
haven't seen the new ones, go to the website and check them out - they are
beautiful and with the same wonderful sense of humour as the first batch)
and my boys (14, 18 and 22) use them as "tests" of their friends. If the
friend reacts in a positive way, great. If they don't - the boys consider it
time for some education!

Teresa
