Hello fellow Lactnetters! I've been lurking here for a couple of months,
and I've "uncloaked" so I can ask for some
suggestions. I should first introduce myself; I am a LLL leader and
stay-at-home mother to our nearly 3 year old nursling. That said, there
is a mother in our LLL group who is currently on 200mg of Zoloft
nightly. Her psychiatrist wants to add 5mg
of Ritalin to her regime. Her daughter will be 10 months old on the 20th
of this month and weighs between 24
and 25 pounds. She is completely refusing all solids. The mother has
used Prozac with great success before she had her children, and
feels it would probably be helpful(she's not seeing a change right now).
If she did switch to Prozac, it would be 40mg, instead
of the 20mg I have seen recommended. So, here are the questions....
If she does add Ritalin, can she nurse around it(she would take it in
the morning when her daughter doesn't nurse for five hours)? What's the
halflife of Ritalin? Is there any problems she should be aware of with
Ritalin(other than the information Dr. Hale recently posted)?
What kind of adverse ramifications could a dose of 40mg/day with Prozac
have in her case? I have found little information on Prozac, and what I
have seen is with a 20mg/day dosage. BTW, her doctor will not currently
write her a prescription for Prozac unless she weans the baby first.
Are there any other alternatives in medications she could explore?
If you could also include research information I can give her to take to
the doctor that would be great.
Thank you in advance!
Jennifer
