WOW! We talked an insurance company into paying for banked milk for a baby
in this area. The baby had a gastroschisis, ended up losing 50% of bowel,
had liver damage from months of total parenteral nutrition, and mom was told
she "might as well quit pumping because the baby would probably need a
specialized formula."
Two months later, when the baby was able to eat, nothing EXCEPT breast milk
stayed down. Even a teaspoon of ABM of any kind added to breast milk,
caused the baby to throw up the whole thing. Mom is pregnant and
relactation wasn't working and she was just about out of frozen breast milk.
I copied an inch-high stack of information and had a little conference with
the pediatrician, who tackled the insurance company. At first, the
pediatrician was very skeptical....But wonder of wonders! It was approved!
Things are looking up for this family.
For a change, this company did not say, "Just give the baby formula," this
time.
