I have to agree with Valerie and Heather. Here, (Cape Town) we tend to follow the "American
style" of childbirth etc. (That is, obstetrician driven as opposed to midwife driven.)
Sulpiride and metaclopramide (Reglan) are dished out like Smarties (candy similar to
Holidays or M&Ms) to mothers of healthy full-term babies. In my practice (9 years) I have
only recommended medication once - after trying everything else first - it worked!
I also have a problem with other galactogogues (Fenugreek etc.). I do suggest them
occasionally but I feel it sends a message to the mother that she needs a crutch - her body
is unable to function properly. The "good ol' vanilla checking of position/latch and
feeding more frequently" does work! And it is immensely empowering for the mother!
