The front page of my local newspaper has an article from the "New York Times"
entitled "Panel warns parents not to sleep with kids under 2". One
paragraph: "'The 64 deaths per year associated with adult beds contrasted
with an average of 50 deaths each year linked to cribs, most of which did not
meet federal standards', Nakamura said." Nakamura is the lead researcher
from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
These number 50 (deaths of solo-sleeping babies) were only those LINKED TO
CRIBS- the total number of solo-sleeping babies who died of SIDS is not
listed. It gives a very skewed picture. Also, the data was based on
coroner's reports, death certificates, and *media accounts*!! I would be
loathe to rely on media accounts for research.
