I recently had a breastfed baby, about 4 month old with bloody stools.
Baby was a little cranky but otherwise OK. Was on amoxicillin for a dx of
otitis.
Since the ears looked good to me I stopped the amoxicillin, checked the
stools for WBC and saw none. I sent stool cultures and C. diff. I wondered,
what is the natural course of untreated C diff in an exclusively breastfed
baby?
CBC was normal no excess eosinophils.
I didn't do as RAST as I wasn't suspicious of allergy as the baby has had
nothing but breast milk. Was even milk jaundiced at 2 months.
Mom was sick at the time with aseptic meningitis and the baby's stool
improved spontaneously so I suspect it was viral.
