this week i went to one of the local high schools to talk about the
awesomeness of breastfeeding and the risks of formula feeding. one 8
month pregnant teen said, *oh great! now i feel guilty.* I asked her
why. she said she was a one meal a day chick before she was pregnant
(now on three meals a day during/for her pregnancy) and expected to be a
one meal a day chick once the baby is born. she also mentioned she is a
vegetarian. she mentioned her hcp told her she wouldn't be able to BF
her baby. (makes me suspicious as i know this midwife to be VERY
supportive - of course what a hcp *says* and what is *reported* are
often two different stories.)
i mentioned that most of the world is vegetarian and plenty of moms
throughout the world get 1000 calories/day or less and successfully BF
their happy, healthy babies while working their *ss off in a field.
the next evening i was at the local hospital BFing class to put in a
plug for LLL. guess who was there with her boyfriend??? she told the
group i had helped her make an informed choice and she was determined to
BF her baby. yipeee! i hope her enthusiasm makes it to birth and
beyond. :)
