Valerie, I agree about the constant interruptions causing problems in
getting started BF. recently I visited a mom, post c, who was having great
difficulty getting baby to nurse at home. Because she had been discharged
on Sat. she had to go back to hospital mon am to have hearing test done!
Whoa, wait a minute. I told her to simply call and reschedule when she was
able to get around more easily (instead 6 days post c) and struggle with BF
resolved. Why does everyone's common sense fly out the window when
problems like this come up? Mom was amazed to know that it was her choice
when to go back and do the important hearing test, that it didn't HAVE to
be done Mon am, as long as it was done in the first couple of weeks.
Now before I get flack, I know the test is important and I know all the
little squares have to be checked on all the forms etc. But most parents
are interested in their child's welfare and will follow-up. It just
doesn't have to be done 2 days after a 4 day stay for c-sec! I think we
have really lost our perspective in US on post birth parental functioning,
physical and mental. We don't give them the TLC they so desperately need.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
