I have done this. I want the moms to come in (our consults are free at this
time - any # of visits) but often they do not want to come in or they cannot
get in. I describe in detail over the phone. The important points are
UNWRAP the baby - most of them are still mimicking the swaddled, bundled
baby they have presented to them in hosp (ARRRGGGHHH). I remind them we are
in New Orleans and it is hardly ever cold here, even in Dec/Jan. :)
GET NAKED - mom from waist up and baby from waist up
Describe the WIDE OPEN mouth
Pull the baby in CLOSE and don't be afraid to smush the nose at this point.
And I like the cumberbund analogy of wrapping the baby around you. Most of
these moms do get it and things improve dramatically and the pees and poos
start too.
Granted, this is not the ideal, but it can be done when absolutely
necessary.
