My impression was that a lot of hospital postpartum LCs demonstrate the
clutch hold because they believe/have found it is easier for mother learning
to breastfeed vs. saving a LC's back. I ask because in private practice I've
received many calls a month or two later by moms that are "stuck" in the
football position, which is not as conducive to discreet breastfeeding. These
moms have either said they are "afraid to go out" or are taking bottles when
they go out with baby 'cos they can't breastfeed in public as is! I'd hate to
think ergonomics was behind the problem!

I know it sounds ridiculous, but a lot of today's new mothers have had
absolutely no experience with babies prior to having their own. If they
haven't seen it, they haven't a clue as to how to go about it! (Kind of like
me and a new piece of electronic equipment!)
