Rob asks: "What is Chick fil A ?"
Boy am I glad you asked that, Rob! I thought that maybe it's just something
that I, as a long-term vegetarian, have never heard of, but that everybody
else in America knows about. And what's up with that name? I just don't get
it. And I'm not quite clear on what chickens have to do with cows
"udder-feeding". What am I missing?
More seriously, does anybody else worry a little that relating cows nursing
their calves to humans BFing their babies plays directly into one (or more)
of the classic barriers to BFing? Here in a dairy-farm region of NY, I find
that lots of folks from farms & the rural areas of the county don't want to
BF because "that's what animals do"; they perceive it as being a step *down*
to feed the way cows do.
Not criticising this whole concept & very real accomplishment - I think it's
fantastic that you've gotten a business to promote BFing this way, and it's
inspiring me to try to think of something along similar lines in our area! I
just know that the analogy to cows is one that lots of the folks I worked
with at WIC were pretty sensitive about. (Perhaps esp. since the menfolk in
their lives were apt to make a constant stream of cow and udder and milking
jokes, which the women really didn't appreciate or find all that amusing!)
