Maurenne,

Some of the top hospital practices that are determinal to breastfeeding are -
Many labor and delivery nurses panic if a newborn has some grunting. They
are raced to the nursery for observation when given time and the lungs dry
would be fine, so baby does not go to breast for hours following birth.
Babies are given to the mother to breastfeed and if the baby does not
latch-on they are taken to the Nursery without giving the baby time. Again
hours go by before seen again by mother and baby is in its sleep mode.
We have, I believe an excessive amount of babies with blood sugars below
40. A new protocol approved by the pediatricians states that newborns with
a blood sugar of below 40 are to be given 10% glucose immediately including
breastfeeding babies. The breastfeeding babies are not allowed to go to
breast first.
Some nurses give mothers option of going out to breastfeed or give formula.
Physicians do not believe that giving formula to the newborn can effect
mother, baby or both. What will help physicians understand that this is a
concern.
