The thread re:disagreeing with docs hit close to home. At work
yesterday, the NICU manager reported that the neonatologists have been
furious because some of the nurses (me included) have been encouraging
kangaroo care. One of the neos gave the w/e staff a 30 minute lecture
on how a parents' skin may have "pimples" which could infect the preterm
baby. He reportedly said that preterms have very thin skin and that
they get sepsis from infections that enter through the skin and mucous
membranes. He doesn't want any kangarooing on "his" babies without an
order.
BTW, this is the same doc who bottlefeeds all his preemies long before
they are allowed to go to breast. I'm currently collecting information
to bring to him when we meet to discuss this. It's so sad to watch a
Mom feeding her milk to her baby in a bottle as she's longing to put the
baby to breast. Yikes!
Back to the library to search for more information!
