<< I encourage them to keep up with the stimulation and to
supplement a bit if necessary >>

susan, i am so pleased we all misinterpreted what you meant and that you
advocate using donor breast milk when a mother feels the need to supplement,
presumably when she is unable to get information about what to do with the
baby she is nursing at the time of her temporarily lowered supply.

you go on to say:

"My experience is...if that option is not
at least explored with the mom experiencing cyclical variations in
supply...she will wean, because she thinks it is too much to go through
several days of hungry baby every month."

it is a real relief to know you are discussing using donor breastmilk when
you have these types of discussions with mothers, becaused i myself would
probably erroneously think (if you meant using formula to supplement with)
that you were endorsing using formula . . . or endorsing weaning "because it
is too much trouble" to keep breastfeeding. or that the mother would assume
you were endorsing weaning when it is presented as an acceptable option by
you, the lactation expert. of course this would only be if we didn't inform
the mother about the things she could be doing to prevent this problem.

someone else ready to chime in with the calcium/magnesium and more protein
information, although it has been covered quite thoroughly in the past? i am
assuming that everyone knows that information to give to a mother like this,
and that any discussion of supplementing is theoretical?
