I have a client who ate a lot of peanut butter during preg as per OBs
How-to-Get-More-Protein hand-out. She cont. to eat some during early
lactation. Has family hx of food allergies, and baby showed early signs of
eczema. I spoke to her about solids and her diet around 6 mo, suggesting
avoiding dairy and w/drawing nuts. At age 11 mo. daddy gave baby a nibble
of peanut butter cookie and baby ended up in ER in anaphalactic shock.
Mother is devastated: I tried to do everything right and I ended up
sensitizing my baby during bfg. and now look-- he has a life-treatening
allergy. The allergist suggested this was caused by bfg. and said use of
soy formula as supplements after age 6 mo. potentiated the prob. as soy nuts
are from same plant family as peanuts.

I've never been much for giving directions about diet unless there were
obvious reasons to do so, but I do more careful hx taking now, and if I pick
up anything like asthma in the family hx, or signs of dry skin on baby, I
ask mother to consider avoiding peanuts because they are so life
threatening.
