Hmmm....I have mixed feelings about hindmilk and foremilk.

Of course, I am glad the wonderful flexibility and adaptbilty of mothers
milk continues to be underlined, but I am sick and tired of mothers being
made anxious by half-information about it.

'My health visitor says he needs to be on longer or he won't get the
hindmilk' they say, made worried because their HV has suggested that even
though the baby is thriving, his 'short' frequent feeds are not enough.

Or, 'My midwife says he's only snacking, and I should make him stay on
longer, or he'll get a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and get colic'.....even
though the baby is thriving.

It's another example of throwing out old rules (no more than 10 minutes a
side) and replacing them with new rules which may be equally inappropriate
(no less than 10 minutes a side).

Meeting Mike Woolridge tomorrow - he's giving a presentation to a mixed
audience of lay counsellors and professionals on his current paper Enabling
Women to Breastfeed. I have heard him despair about this very topic (the
hindmilk foremilk misunderstanding).
