Here is some of the articles I can lay my hands on - I use the "box & pile
system" and this is best I can do in the midst of other things going on.
Hazards of Matresses, Beds & Bedding in deaths of infants. Enid
Gilbert-Barness, M.D. et al The American Journal of Forensic Medicine &
Pathology 12(1); 27-32, 1991
This article is a compilation of 52 cases of infant death referred for
autopsy.
20 of the deaths were ruled to be preventable accidents.
9 infants died while lying face down on an adult free floating waterbed [
all infants had been placed on a waterbed for the first time]. " 3 infants
died while sleeping face down for the first time in thick piled sheepskin
rugs. The accidental deaths associated with beds include those in which
the infant's head was wedged in the frame of the crib or bed, one of which
was a waterbed; one where the infant was catapulted off a waterbed; one in
which the infant was strangled in a cord attached to a diaper bag in his
crib. The overlying deaths involved adults falling asleep while in beds
with young infants."
Cases:
4 month old
5 month old
2 1/2 month old
3 1/2 month old
2 1/2 month old
3 month old - wearing restrictive clothing
3 1/2 month old
9 year old child with spastic cerebral palsy
4 month old wedged in matress
overlying on waterbed
2 month old - obese mother
2 week old - obese mother
Grim statistics. Babies can be face up and roll face down. These babies
were placed on alone -
