Talked to a mom this week who called to find out if it was safe for her
to breastfeed since she had had a Depo Provera shot 3 weeks ago and was
smoking a few cigarettes a week.

Had stopped attempting to breastfeed after one day--baby not latching.
Didn't think she had any milk because she had only been able to pump 1
oz. in 3 hours using a cheap electric pump. Had been terribly
disappointed.

She had begun leaking milk and had got the baby to nurse for 5 or 10
minutes (can't remember which). She was thrilled when I told her it was
okay to breastfeed. I tried to correct some of her misinformation for
future reference and offered to see her on Monday. I encouraged her to
keep giving formula as needed but to continue offering the breast
frequently.

She asked if I had ever heard of anything like this, and I said no. She
was happy to have me post her story. Has anyone heard anything like
this? She has not been pumping or offering the breast.

Please reply privately as well as to the list as I am hopelessly behind
on reading posts.
