Barb,

I have no research or studies to prove this, but a while back, I
supported a mother who relactated for her severely allergic, formula-
intolerant baby. I have written about the story on my website, which
will have the accurate figures, but within a week of receiving 1-3oz of
EBM per day, with goat's milk formula, the baby (who was severe FTT) had
gained around 10oz.

The effects we noticed on this terribly sick baby was that her GER
reduced significantly in severity; she gained weight; she stopped
screaming all night; she caught up her developmental milestones.

The mother continued pumping for the baby for 6 months (she had started
at 6mo and the baby never latched on). She never got more than 8oz EBM
in 24 hours, but the effects on the baby's health was totally
miraculous. Sadly, this same mother is once again in a pumping situation
(she has the baby with congenital CMV), but I think this previous
experience has convinced her that breastmilk is always worth it.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I really wonder if the
mother can't be persuaded to continue pumping just a little longer?
Maybe if she could see an end to it, she'd be able to continue? So
often, people are told that there is no benefit to less than x amount of
breastmilk in a day. My experience is that 1oz makes a difference,
although I have no data to support that.
