YES the mother should avoid penicillin-type drugs if her baby has been shown
to be sensitive. This is MHO based on personal experience: My daughter
developed marked wheezing within 12 hours of a dose of amoxicillin at age 7
mos. She had an ear infection, yeah some breastfed kids get them! When she
was 9 mos, I got horrific mastitis and accepted a prescription for
ampicillin without even thinking. (fever >101F, red streaks up to my neck,
dunno why I wasn't thinking!) Four days into my antibiotic treatment, she
started wheezing "out of the clear blue" - she was perfectly healthy except
for that. I immediately stopped the ampicillin and her wheezing disappeared
over about a day.
I've seen references for this but don't recall where. It certainly seems
most prudent to have the mother avoid penicillins.
