I can tell you from personal and direct knowledge that in Tompkins County
(home of Ithaca NY), there were always differences in scales between WIC &
the doctors' offices. I can also tell you that WIC's scales (part of the
county Dep't of Health) were regularly checked & calibrated by the county's
official person in charge of weights and measures. Last time we had her
check ours, we asked her how often she was asked to check any of the
doctors' offices scales. The answer: "NEVER!"
WIC employees also had extremely exacting standards & procedures for doing
weights properly. We had inservices and practice drills regularly, several
times/year. But guess who was constantly denigrating whose weights? And
guess which weight parents were more apt to believe?

inaccurate method of measuring length/height!)
