I just have to chime in here about using "bm" as the abbreviation for
breastmilk! As a nurse (21 years) writing bm for breastmilk just makes me
bristle. Thus far, I haven't been able to bring myself to use this
abbreviation. I am a LC in a hospital setting, but also am the coordinator
of a home visit program here. In fact, "bm" is the approved hospital
abbreviation for bowel movement. I do at times chart "ebm" as was
suggested, however many times we document information about breastmilk,
which is not necessarily "expressed," as in "transfer of breastmilk." Now,
writing in a chart "transfer of bm to the baby evidenced by..." doesn't
sound very appetizing!!! Sometimes I abbreviate it as br. milk, and that's
a little shorter, but still inadequate. Maybe we could just use "mm" as in
mother's milk?
Still thinking this one through, Linda J. Tandy, MSN, RN, IBCLC
