Does it happen? Well, I know it does. But less and less often as awareness
grows. In 1995 a formula rep. came to talk to us about their "new" premie
formula, and he gave out pens with little bears on them, and those holders
that go around your neck.
I said to him, "We aren't supposed to use these in our WIC clinics." He
acted very surprised. After he left, I had staff throw out the holders and
made them rip the advertising off the pens. This was an educational
experience for all. (he hasn't been back)
At Missouri WIC conference 1997, the contract formula co. had bags,
pens, pads of paper, etc. We protested to our WIC Chief and the formula
rep. was asked to remove these items from the table. (after a whole bunch
had been given out -- I later saw these items in use at WIC meetings)
For this year's WIC conference, we asked that the formula co. not be
allowed to bring formula promotional items -- only scientific literature.
Another "probreastfeeding" nutritionist questioned why they shouldn't be
allowed to have items. (I'll let you know what happens)
At a state meeting, state staff had "formula" bags. They were not for
the infant formulas but for the adult formulas and they got them at the
American Dietetic Association conference. I still suggested they buy a
breastfeeding bag.
The "truth" in some states has to be that this continues on, but it is
NOT approved by the program.
