This past weekend I was working with a new mom of a premie infant, when I
asked her if she was going to breastfeed her infant, she stated I cannot
because I am on coumodin and heparin, I promptley photo copied info in Briggs
and Hale and showed it to the Cardiologist that was managing her
anticoagulent thx. He said at that point, well it was not problem to him, so
I shared with mom this info and said if she desired to pump and eventually
breastfeed her preterm (30week) infant she could. I left the room to give the
family time to think and latter on that day she decided to pump!!!Well here
is where the plot thickens, She will need to have open heart surgery in the
next 2-3 months to replace a valve, and there is aslo a clot in her heart. On
sunday, the powers that be (neo and ??) convinced her that pumping would be
very stressfull etc. etc. etc.!! And how could she breastpump in the ICU (it
has been done here) Well what I am wondering do any of you have experiances
working with breastfeeding mothers and open heart surgery, I would love to
share this with the neo.
Thanks
Karen Querna
