Alice asked about a mother with only nipple sensitivity as the presenting
symptom. I had a mother with this just a month or so ago. Same description:
"but her
nipples are otherwise sensitive to even the lightest touch, even cloth
brushing up against them." They baby did have unusual tongue motion, but
when the latch was deepened and improved, the sensitivity remained.
The LC series "Candidiasis & Breastfeeding" does state that, "The nipple is
especially sensitive to light touch" on page 6.
It did turn out to be yeast even though no recent history of vaginal yeast
during pregnancy or after birth. Baby developed a slight fine coating to the
tongue and eventually husband had jock itch!!! Only perceivable symptom at
four weeks was this nipple sensitivity. Then pain developed. The poor tongue
function and slightly shallow latch was so obvious that it took a while to
discern that this sensitivity had not changed throughout the discovery
process. Some times right upon coming out of the baby's mouth, you could
see the ever so slightest puffiness to part of the nipple. No color change,
no shininess.
