I am posting the following on behalf of Elisabeth Sterken, national
director of INFACT Canada and Chair of IBFAN:
INFACT Canada, as the North American Regional office for IBFAN has received
a number of inquiries regarding the LLLI conference and Disneyworld. We
have solicited responses from a number of people in our network and wish to
make the following comments:
Firstly it is of primary importance to realize and appreciate that LLLI is
a vital, global partner to IBFAN, to ILCA, to WABA and all others working
to support and promote breastfeeding. Our working together is able to make
a difference worldwide to ensure that all women everywhere can exercise
their choice to breastfeed their children with unbiased information and
support. This partnership and solidarity is strong and necessary.
Regarding the LLLI conference at the Walt Disney World Dolphin:
Although the hotel is named Walt Disney, the hotel is not a Walt Disney
Hotel. It is owned by a a real estate and insurance company and managed by
Sheraton Hotels, nor is it located in the Disney park.
Nonetheless, because of the name and close proximity to the Disney
attraction, IBFAN feels that the choice of venue was very unfortunate and
disappointing. In addition to the implications of endorsement of
Disney/Nestle, it puts unfair pressure on families wishing to support the
boycott.
In spite of this, however, IBFAN encourages its members and supporters to
attend this
important conference. Since the conference is so close to the Walt Disney
site, we can use this as an opportunity direct our criticisms and anger
about Nestle and its deadly marketing practices to the Disney empire and
perhaps make public demonstrations or other activities to highlight our
concerns about putting profits before health.
What we need now is some creative discussion as to how we can focuss on
Nestle and gain some public and media attention to this issue. Any ideas?
Elisabeth Sterken, Chairperson, IBFAN
