It IS our profession and they are OUR babies. We need to define the
"norm" of breastfeeding. I was harassed at work for bringing my newborn
with me. Our agency had a playroom specifically designed for children
with a rocking chair and a changing table for clients to use during
mother support groups and parenting education workshops. In fact, we
offered child care in this very room.

Yet, I was told that my paycheck would be docked for nursing my child in
my private office the two mornings I worked.

Equally unsettling was the fact the our social worker who placed infants
for adoption could strut around the entire agency with a bottle-fed
infant waiting for birth parents to arrive, while I was asked to leave
the baby at home.

After weeks of fighting with superiors, none of whom had ever nursed, I
quit! I wonder who really won?
